I keep getting "pLog Tablet is taking a long time to respond" issues

Recently, we have been seeing an increase in reports where pLog Tablet app starts freezing up after a certain amount of time spent logging data in the app. Often times, this problem will be accompanied by a system error message dialog stating that the application is taking a long time to respond. In the software development sphere, this problem is referred to as an ANR, which stands for "app not responding." It has many causes, and as a result, many possible solutions.

This post describes the possible solutions that may resolve this problem. As always, whenever you encounter an issue with pLog Tablet, we encourage you to contact us at support@dataforensics.net - the more information we can gather about a problem, the faster we can come up with a permanent solution.

In September 2024, we noted an increase of ANRs in our monitoring tools. All of these ANRs appear to be related to how the Android OS allocates resources, called "memory" (note that this is different from the storage space on the device, so freeing up space will not resolve the issue), that applications use while running to operate smoothly. Prior to September, we had never observed ANRs of this nature, so we believe that the cause of the issue may result from a recent system update that was propagated by Samsung or Google.

So far, we have found that performing a factory reset of the affected device will resolve the problem. Before performing a factory reset, we strongly recommend uploading your field data/photos by syncing, and performing an external SD card dataset backup via Preferences | Backup Options that you can use to restore your data afterwards. Dataforensics cannot assist you with recovering lost data if an external backup is not made before performing the factory reset. Please also note that a factory reset will wipe all internal device storage, so the backup must be saved to an external location, such as an insertable SD card, or a cloud location. We understand that this solution may not be ideal, but it has been the only thing thus far that has reliably solved the repeated freezing and latency behavior.

As we learn more about this problem, we may discover additional solutions. We ask that if you reach out to us at support@dataforensics.net immediately if you encounter this problem.
